I do listen when it is on, as it's part of being Australian...isn't it!
No I don't have a bet, but it is non the less quite exciting.
I love also to watch on the news, the fashions and of course the girl who made her own outfit!
She gets the first prize, and they all seem to have worked quite hard on their outfits.
At it's a lot of fun and just part of our culture.
No, I don't like the way they treat the horses. The exertion of races causes a lot of horses to bleed into their windpipes, and so many of them are killed if they're injured or outlive their usefulness. I wonder why this is so seldom questioned compared with animals used in circuses, rodeos, the running of the bulls etc.
I love Melbourne Cup Day. I used to go to MC lunches every year when my husband was working, but since he's retired, we stay home & watch the race on the tv. I always bet on 5-8 horses, & even though I always get a placing or 2, I never get the outlay back, but it's still fun trying too. (It's only $5-$10.) I only back the names of the horses that I like the sound of! Before our daughters stated school, I'd take them to playgroup on Tuesdays, so on Melbourne Day, I'd bake a cake for the mothers, ice it in green for the grass, put down brown icing for the track, put plastic fencing around the cake, have tiny Lego flowers on it, with a few plastic horses on the track! I was in Melbourne visiting family once during cup week, & watched the parade through the streets which I enjoyed. It was the day before the big race.
