I used to make my own bread all the time and, in fact still have dough to make more sour dough loaves.
However the ones you buy are now preservative free (relatively!) and I find them a better shape than my huge slices made in the bread maker.
I will however now use up the 3 packs I have left - bread is now quite cheap and I usually buy at Bakers Delight or even Coles/Woolworths is now nice.
I used to make my own fruit bead and buns!!! Oh yum! I have also made other lovely plain white bread but in the days before the bread makers became available. It was such hard work, but also a great deal of fun when I was younger and a lot fitter!! My arthritis is so bad now that it is not an option to do anything by hand anymore, so I have lost the interest. I buy delicious bread from both Baker's Delight and the supermarkets these days, like Finy does! I am not a huge bread eater at any time, but I do enjoy it when it is lovely and fresh, slathered with real butter!!
I've made beer bread in the oven, but it's been a while. My husband makes bread in the breadmaker- usually wholemeal, though we have tried raisin bread, which worked quite well. I like the smell when it's baking.
I never have made my own bread, even after we bought bread maker, & 10 kilos of flour!!! The flour has long been thrown out. We bought the bread maker because our daughter's b/f at the time had said how easy it was to make bread. My mother used to always make brown bread. I remember the 3 deep sided tins, sitting outside the kitchen window in the sun, waiting for the dough to rise.
