I also distribute food at Christmas, so I get to see what is inside some of the boxes, given to those in need.
I was so shocked!! a great deal last year gave ''tinned fish''.
Since the meltdown in Japan, with the radio nuclear waste.
I was not impressed that people would not eat it .....but it's o.k. to give away.
I'm not saying there was anything wrong, with the tinned fish, but we got 200% more than any other year!
Don't give rusty tinn's thinking ''Oh they will eat it''.
Don't give old date food, because they do know.....please don't give anything, you would not find 'nice' to eat.
Some years the food bank is very low, so some items are badly missing.
Here are some items that are always needed.
Mashed potato in pkt
Long Life Custard
Plain Baked Beans
And we have even had some
great folks give the odd box of chocolates.
40% I have seen over the years is out of date.I guess they think something is better than nothing?...what they don't really understand is people can read, and if they feel bad , that can make it worse. :(
Seeing this reminds that I should probably donate to the food drive at the local shopping centre. We used to donate quite a bit while we were at school, but not as much these days, which is a shame because there are a lot of families doing it tough, especially at this time of year.
I have started buying one tin of food a week and donating it to the local food bank. I wish we could realistically give more, but I feel that one tin a week does add up over a year so it's not such a bad effort.
