I actually go out of my way to buy products that are preservative free, and sometimes put back a product that has too many numbers/preservatives in it.
This is particularly so with bread as I was horrified to see the chemicals that some brands have in them. I now buy bread mainly from Bakers Delight who have delightful, preservative free bread (get it sliced and freeze in small packs) and sometimes from Coles.
Other products, if given the choice, I will get ones that have the least preservatives in them where possible.
Yes It is more expensive than Coles own brand however the loaves are FAR larger so I do not think it is expensive compared to the same elsewhere and you just CANNOT compare it to $1 a loaf bread -their white bread is divine also -totally different to the cheap ones
you should be aware that in nsw labelling for bread now only needs to say bread flour it does not have to tell you whats in "bread flour". So you should not presume that breads are free of preservatives.
I have always tried to use Preservative Free products as I have so many allergies and many preservatives contain salicylate in some form which is a huge no-no with me!! This is actually the naturally occurring preservative in the skin of most fruits and vegetables which is why I have, for over 30 years, unfortunately peeled most of the ones I eat. There are so many great products out there these days which do not have any added preservatives so I choose these wherever possible!
If I worried about this there would be nothing in my pantry. Almost everything has presrvatives in it or on it, so it doesn't keep me up nights worrying about it, because there is nothing that can be done about it. We don't know the long term effects , sure. I AM sure that most people would be complaining if everything in their pantry had to be thrown out after two days. Who could afford this, to replace the contents of your pantry every few days. I know I couldn't. Preservatives aren't ideal, but until we find a better way for food to last more than a few days....we must put up or shut up.
In the past, I didn't worry a thing about preservatives as long as the food tastes great and my stomach is filled to the brim.
Nowadays, however, you hear a lot about cancers, malignant tumors and degenerative diseases that are caused by food additives and other non-natural ingredients. You start worrying about your health and become health conscious.
These days, I endeavour to read labels including ingredients and nutrition facts before making a final purchase. Any food rich in gluten, food colouring and MSG, I do away with it.
Health, more often than not, is a choice. It's your choice to fall prey to preservatives or avoid it for the sake of your health.
