I didn't realise until I lived with a fireplace, that lighting and keeping a fire going actually takes skill. Do you have the skill? When did you last light a fire?

Yes, I learned that in Brownies. Also I volunteered at the Fire Event at the Woodford Festival one year and they taught us how to do the thing where you make sparks by rubbing two sticks together over a pile of dried grass. I only got it to work once but it was cool to do. I'd much rather use matches though.
It does take a bit of practice! But I learned from a young age how to light a fire.
I never had to do it until we had a fireplace. It took me a bit to get it down to a fine art but I'm finally there! It's very satisfying.
I can light a fire, and keep it going.....

Last time was many many moons ago.
I LOVE them, but not really a need for them unless your down south.
No, but that is a skill I would like to acquire in the New Year.

I do sometimes have trouble but having lived alone on a farm with a lovely big room with enclosed fire place, I had a lot of practice.

Sometimes it worked first time, and often it just did not.

I did the same things each time but for some unknown reason it did not always work, and it was really frustrating having to go back and start again.

In the end I started quite early so that it would be warm by the time it got cold outside.

Yes, I was a girl guide and we had to light camp fires. A bit like riding a bike, you never forget!

Despite living in a couple of houses that has log burners I have never really got,the hang of it. My husband usually takes over although one time he was away at sea, it was cold enough so I lit a fire and used lighter fuel to start it (stupid I know) and poured on too much. I did discover that it makes a lovely big whooshing noise when lit and that eyebrows singe really quickly :)
