Can recipes be copyrighted?

With so many of the same recipes floating around the internet can a recipe really be copyrighted?

An ingredient list is not but the method description in a book or article is.
No, I'm pretty sure recipes can't be copyrighted; although restaurants might be able to try to claim if another venue used exactly the presentation, name, etc.

Even when I am following a recipe from a book or article, I always make adjustments to it for my own taste. Anyhow, a recipe is never REALLY original.
From a publishing perspective as a recipe writer, you're automatically protected by copyright just like any other writer.
